India celebrates Army Day on January 15 every year in honor of the sacrifices of soldiers who have selflessly served the nation and are a remarkable example of brotherhood. It is a day to remember the selfless service and heroism of national pride and brave soldiers.
On the same day in 1949, General KM Kariyappa took over as the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, and therefore this day is significant in the history of independent India.
Significance
The Indian Army was established in 1895 but operated without an Indian leader until the country gained independence from British rule. On January 15, 1949, General KM Kariyappa became the first Indian to take charge of the Army. He took over from General Francis Butcher, the last British commander of the National Army. A historic day is celebrated with patriotism at all military command headquarters.
This year, however, the day will be celebrated amid stringent regulations due to the third wave of the COVID-19 epidemic.
